True Love

Dear Friend,

Because of Valentine’s Day that’s celebrated this month, February is considered the month of “romance.” But not everyone understands what real love is.

The romantic kind of love that brings candy and flowers when people date is okay. But the kind of love that puts others’ needs before its own is the kind of love Jesus had.

To me, Jesus is the greatest Love Story ever told, and it was an encounter with Him that completely changed my life. Amen. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not against the candy, flower romance thing (I’m smiling). However, it would mean more to me to have someone stick by me through thick and thin.

When I had cancer, my husband at the time said, “I hope welfare will help you, because I won’t,” and he left. He was supposed to be a Christian.

That should tell us that not all the people who say they’re saved have a relationship with the Lord, because Jesus would never run out on us.

I have met people who absolutely made major sacrifices to help other people, going out of their way to help someone. I’m not just talking about older people who have stepped up to the plate to raise their grandchildren. My friend and godson Darrin stepped up to be a father to Levi, and he takes it very seriously—thank You, Jesus.

I’m grateful that the Lord has always made sure that I’m covered. I have children and grandchildren who do everything they can to help me. I’m blessed. I’ve had people tell me that the Lord had them praying for me. I am very thankful for that.

The Father’s demonstration in John 3:16 should always remind us of how great His love is for us: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The Apostle John is another great example. He loved Jesus so much that he took care of Jesus’s mom after He was crucified. And there are so many amazing examples we could follow that Jesus gave.

I know there are many ways to show love. In John 15:12,13, Jesus says,

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

John 15:17 says: These things I command you, that ye love one another.

I know a lot of people think there isn’t anything good in the world anymore, but there is. I know a lady who moved from another state to take care of a sick friend until her friend went on to be with Jesus. I know a young lady who gave up a kidney to help a friend. I know people who if they couldn’t do anything, they would pray for you until you had a breakthrough.

Sometimes just a kind word can go a long way. You never know what a person’s going through. Romans 12:10 says, Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another. Romans 12:19 tells us not to avenge ourselves or give place to wrath. God will take care of it. That’s my paraphrase. Amen. It is very important to forgive and let go. Jesus can and will take care of you.

I’m trying to teach my young son Levi to be kind, and for six years old, he’s trying. This morning he said, “Wait, Mom, I’ll move this so you won’t trip.” I was so proud of him and I let him know I was.

I’m believing that we can all rekindle the fire of our first Love—Jesus—and set a standard that can change the world.

In His love,

Donner Roberson
